Greater Twin Cities Su-Mac
Cairn Terrier Club
(1968 - present)

Su-Mac Club Founded by Fred and Jean Olander

"On 19 October 1968, a group of interested individuals formed a Cairn Terrier Club to serve the breed interests in the Minnesota area.   One of the most important functions of the breed club is to encourage the breeding of better dogs and gathering and dispensing knowledge that will help improve the breed.
A breed club can also organize a Specialty Show as a showcase for the Breed ... for it is in exhibiting what you have accomplished and comparing your dogs with those brought in from afar that we all learn."

Whether 'tis grown dog or bairn,
       You'll delight in a Cairn,
The blend of decorum and devil!

Since the early days of the Su-Mac Club, the membership has included Minnesotans breeding Cairns under the affixes Scots Mist, Druidsgate, Mist-N-Mac, Gala-Gallant, Timberlake, and Tickle Road Cairns.  Two of the original members who remained active to recent times are McPooh (Joy Ganyo) and Kim-E-Cairns (Carmen Harkins).  Ms Ganyo exhibited a male pup at the January, 2006, Su-Mac Specialty.
Longtime and continuing members include Jo Anne Bucholz (Club secretary), Ivan and Joan Policoff, and Scott and Karen Wardrope (Club treasurer).  Associate members and recipients of the former Club newsletter, "Smoke Signals," edited by Joy Ganyo, have included Charlotte Burr (WI), Eleanor Finkler (IL), Gerald Klein (IL), and Taylor Coleman (CT).
The Su-Mac Club has organized "fun matches" since May, 1970, and Specialty shows since 25 August, 1978.  Club champions have included Cairns of Olanders (some sired by Ch Gayla Cairns Toy Tiger), John Tenseth (with dogs sired by Ch Caithness Fay's Falcon) and Carmen Harkins (who owned Ch Bonnie Vandal of Wolfpit, described as 10 5/8" X 15" and 16 pounds.

Why "Su-Mac?"

The choice of the name, 'Su-Mac,' was made for several reasons.  Minnesota's Indian heritage is referred to by the name, 'Sioux' (Lakota).  The founders of the Club, Fred and Jean Olander, used Indian names for their dogs, and the 'Su' in the Club name honors them.  The 'Mac,' of course, brings in the Scots heritage of the Cairns.  Together, the combined terms, 'Su-Mac,' also allude to the fiery-red fall plant common to the State that might also be a fitting symbol for our Cairns. (based on a report by Joy Ganyo - 1969).
