History

The Greater Twin Cities Su-Mac Cairn Terrier Club was founded around September, in 1968, to give Twin Cities area “Cairnites” a means of communicating with other Cairn owners and breeders. Pet owners as well as breeders and show advocates have always been welcome. The early members began holding monthly meetings and invited Cairn owners to come from the five state area, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa.  To name a few original members, Fred and Jean Olander, Carmen Harkens, and Joy Ganyo.

The choice of the name Su-Mac was made for several reasons. Minnesota’s Indian heritage is referred to by the Souix-Su condensation.   The mac, of course, brings the Scotch into the combination. Then, too, the sumac, a native American plant, is a fiery red fall beauty in Minnesota, a fitting symbol for the spirit of the Cairn.
