Obedience is a fantastic activity for you and your Cairn to participate and excel in. The companionship that is created between you and your dog is irreplaceable! Not to mention the fun and excitement as your dog learns the different skills and how the rewards contribute to his or her well-being and happiness as a working and “pleasing” dog. The Cairn Terrier has a challenging personality because they are independent but yet they love their owners enough that they look forward to learning the obedient skills and having fun together as a team. Rewarding as well will be the good behavior and manners that your Cairn will acquire.
There are many levels of obedience for which you receive titles from the AKC. Participating in obedience classes is the first step, learn the skills, then participate in the AKC sanctioned dog shows to receive “legs”, or rather your dog earns a qualifying score by correctly performing in the show ring the skills learned. As you move up the levels, new and exciting skills will be learned.
